Expression of the identity of the Moroccan creative between heritage and modernity.

Morocco’s geographical position has always made it a crossroads for the world’s great civilizations. Even today, Morocco stands at the crossroads of several areas of cultural influence: Western, African, and Arabic-Muslim.

This Morocco is itself the bearer of an ancestral culture made up of a multitude of identity layers resulting from population movements through the ages. These include the Amazigh identity, the Arab identity from the Arabian Peninsula, and the African identity represented by economic and cultural exchanges with sub-Saharan Africa.

Moroccan youth live at the heart of this cultural effervescence, made up of multiple and varied elements from different cultures. Popular culture is the perfect expression of a mixture that is sometimes homogeneous, sometimes heterogeneous, weaving a rich and complex web of identity.

This year, Bayt Al Fenn takes a look at a subject that is both complex and fascinating, a subject that has the ability to affect both society as a whole and the individual in their uniqueness: Identity. How do our youth find themselves in the midst of this cultural plurality? How do they manage to blossom and develop their personalities in the face of the expectations and models emanating from this mosaic of cultures?

How do they bear the weight of a culture as rich and multi-secular as Morocco’s?

As part of the Bayt Al Fenn 2022 residency, each artist will be able to express their own identity and unique vision of Moroccan identity through their art. Each artist will have the freedom to share a story and a DNA with the public. The result of the convergence of these works may well answer the question CHKOUN ANA ?
