Meriem Mihammou
Meriem Mihammou, born in 1995 in Ouarzazate, Morocco, inherited the art of weaving from her mother in their native village. A 2018 graduate of the Academy of Traditional Arts, she is passionate about the patterns and hues of traditional Moroccan rugs. Meriem seeks to push the boundaries of her craft by fusing tradition and modernity, creating her own vision of this heritage. Her work bears witness to the evolution of the art of carpet weaving, in symbiosis with the artists who perpetuate it. In addition to weaving, she ventures into embroidery on photographs, constantly expanding the horizons of her art.
" From Birth "
Embroidered photography 160 x 80, 160 x 80
The work consists of a diptych of embroidered photographs. Two snapshots of infants to illustrate the cultural disparities in the way newborns are celebrated according to gender in the Moroccan culture.Between striking voids, shimmering colors and meaningful embroidery, the work reveals a composition in which every detail is intentional. Inciting deep reflection on gender inequalities rooted from birth, the work is an invitation to reflect on the impact of traditions and rituals perpetuated in our society.
