Influenced by urban life, philosophy, and cinema, Achraf Khalis’s work focuses on capturing candid, genuine emotions. Drawing from societal paradoxes and psychological insights, he seeks to explore the complexities of human emotions and identity. His photographic project, created during the Bayt Al Fenn artistic residency and aligned with the theme Hiya, Howa, examines the lived realities of androgynous and fluid individuals in Moroccan society. Through artistic staging, the project deconstructs traditional identity models to propose new representations where masculine and feminine energies coexist harmoniously. The series challenges conventional gender norms, offering a poetic contrast that highlights the coexistence of masculine and feminine aspects within individuals. Khalis captures authentic moments that reflect the complexity of identity in a society navigating the tension between modernity and tradition. Through this work, he aims to spark a broader conversation around gender and identity in Morocco, inviting viewers to reflect on the fluidity and richness of self-expression.
